IT does it again and tops: 5 Comeback Careers

May 30, 2010 Leave a comment

A new study resported on Yahoo! hotjobs indicates that the U.S. Department of Labor’s projections to have more than 30% career growth for people with a bachelor degree in 5 areas, with Software Engineers and Network Analysts at the top of the list, so if you are thinking of getting a degree, here’s something to think about:

  • A 4-year bachelor’s degree will give you access to entry-level positions
  • Good career choices include: a general degree in computer science,  or a more focused degree in computer engineering, software development, or management information systems (MIS).
  • Average salaries range from $73,830 (network system analysts), $87,900 (software engineers), and $94,250 (systems software).

Software Certifications are very nice too but you should only get them to “endorse” that you are specialized in a specific area after earning a full degree, or if the job you are aspiring to get requires such credentials.

Oh yeah, the other 4 areas in case you are curious or looking for a career change:

  • Financial Examiners and Personal Financial Advisors
  • Biomedical Engineers
  • Environmental Engineers
  • Marketing Survey Researchers

Study finds (unsurprisingly) that job cuts aimed at short-term gains have negative long-term effects for shareholders

Here’s an interesting (yet unsurprising) twist to the very popular practice of letting people go with the objective of increasing shareholder value.

Honestly this should not be a shocker to anybody, just merely considering all the know-how that they let go with each cut. I don’t care how long or short people were there, they come, they learn, and when they leave, so does their contribution to the company.

In turn, those who fight hard to retain their workforce -according to the study- are able to maintain their core element and be better prepared for whatever the future brings when the situation improves.
